The Problem

Noise and vibration are major sources of occupant complaint in modern buildings. Typical construction methods for walls and floor/ceiling assemblies may be inadequate to help control unwanted sound. Simply adding additional mass is not the correct approach. The Mass Law states that doubling the mass (weight) of building materials will reduce sound transmission by up to only 6 decibels (dB). For example, a 4” thick concrete slab has a sound transmission loss (TL) of 42 dB at 250 Hz. Increasing the slab thickness to 8” will increase the TL to 48 dB. This 6 dB reduction is perceived to be only about 25% quieter.

The Solution

By introducing composite construction systems one can achieve substantially higher levels of sound control. Voyce-Legier, Inc. can provide Floating Floors, Sound Rated Underlayments, Vibration Isolation Systems, Isolated Ceilings, Wall Isolation Clips and Composite Barrier Systems to help “Beat the Mass Law” and achieve substantial increases in noise reduction.
